What Should Be Included in an HVAC Estimate

A clear, specific estimate is one of the easiest ways to compare HVAC companies fairly.

Scope of work in writing.

Repair, component replacement, or full system replacement โ€” spelled out clearly enough that there's no ambiguity about what's actually being done.

Equipment specified by model and rating.

Brand, model number, and efficiency rating (SEER2 for cooling, AFUE for heating), not just "a new unit" โ€” efficiency and equipment tier both affect real-world cost and performance.

Load calculation, not a guess.

Correct sizing should be based on an actual calculation for the home, not simply matching the size of the old system.

Labor, permits, and disposal.

Installation labor, required permits, and disposal of the old equipment โ€” either itemized or clearly bundled, as long as it's clear what's included.

Warranty details.

Both the manufacturer's equipment warranty and the installer's workmanship warranty, including what each actually covers and for how long.

Payment structure and timeline.

How payment is scheduled, a realistic installation timeline, and what happens if the scope changes once work begins.
